typing en dashes (–) and em dashes (—)

I’ve inserted dashes of the en (–) and em (—) variety many times in Microsoft Word (in Windows, pre-Ribbon) using the Insert → Symbol, Special Characters tab. Today, I figured out how to insert the en and em dashes on a Mac, in any application where you can enter text, no menus required.

Mac keyboard shortcut for an en dash: Option- – (minus).
Mac keyboard shortcut for an em dash: Option-_ (underscore).

Just for reference, here’s how to do it in Windows, in any application where you can enter text.

Windows keyboard shortcut for an en dash: ALT+0150 (on the keypad).
Windows keyboard shortcut for an em dash: ALT+0151 (on the keypad).

I’m tagging this post with WILT, for what I learned today.
